Seán McGirr Leaves McQueen After Three Years

Seán McGirr is leaving McQueen after three years as creative director, closing a short but consequential chapter just weeks after bringing the house’s runway back to London.

Kering confirmed the departure on October 15, 2026. The group said a new creative leader will be announced soon, but it did not identify a successor or provide a debut date. Those details remain unconfirmed.

The announcement matters beyond another name in fashion’s continuing cycle of designer changes. McQueen is simultaneously redefining its creative identity, reducing its retail footprint and returning to the British context that shaped its founder.

What Kering confirmed

In its official October 15 announcement, Kering said McGirr will leave his creative-director role after joining the house in 2023. Group CEO Luca de Meo thanked him and said the ambition is to establish a bold new direction based on McQueen’s tailoring, uncompromising creativity and rebellious heritage.

McQueen president and CEO Gianfranco D’Attis credited McGirr with reconnecting the house to London, its culture and its creative energy. McGirr described his own vision as a dialogue between raw human beauty and the precision and rigor at the center of the house.

Kering’s statement did not characterize the departure as a dismissal, did not name McGirr’s next role and did not disclose who will lead the studio in the interim.

A three-year creative arc

McGirr arrived from JW Anderson in October 2023, succeeding Sarah Burton after her 26 years at the house, including 13 as creative director. His appointment immediately carried an unusually difficult assignment: respect one of fashion’s most emotionally charged legacies while building a distinct proposition for a new generation.

His early collections emphasized youth, subculture and an intentionally rawer silhouette. Critical response evolved across the tenure. Vogue Business noted that the second collection appeared more cohesive and commercially viable than his debut.

The final Spring/Summer 2027 collection was presented in London beneath the Gothic architecture of Lincoln’s Inn Chapel. It combined closed shoulders resembling furled wings, dark romanticism, gowns and deliberately anarchic beauty details. The show also marked the house’s return to the London schedule after 25 years.

Paris Runway Official previewed that homecoming in McQueen Returns to London Fashion Week After 25 Years on the Official Calendar. Kering has not indicated that the departure reverses the London commitment. Vogue Business reports that the next creative director is expected to debut there.

The departure comes during a business reset

The leadership change cannot be separated from McQueen’s restructuring. According to Vogue Business, D’Attis became chief executive in June and the house has been simplifying its operations. Kering said earlier in 2026 that McQueen would operate with approximately 50% fewer stores by year-end than it had at the close of 2025.

At Kering’s April capital-markets presentation, de Meo argued that McQueen should be treated as a niche, avant-garde house rather than forced into the same structure as the group’s larger brands. He emphasized occasion wear, tailoring, gowns and distinctive accessories—the categories most naturally connected to the house’s authority.

Those comments provide the commercial frame for the next appointment. The new creative lead will not simply inherit a runway vocabulary. They will be designing for a smaller, more focused business model.

Paris Runway Official analysis: the next designer needs precision, not volume

The confirmed strategy suggests that McQueen’s next phase will be judged on clarity rather than rapid scale. A reduced store network creates pressure, but it can also allow the house to concentrate investment, clienteling and product storytelling around fewer, more important destinations.

The creative opportunity is to translate spectacle into categories that can sustain the business:

  • Tailoring: McQueen’s Savile Row foundation offers a recognizable entry point for both womenswear and menswear.
  • Occasion dressing: gowns and formalwear can support cultural visibility, red-carpet placement and private-client relationships.
  • Accessories with tension: the strongest products should carry the house’s edge without becoming costume.
  • London identity: showing in London can reconnect the brand with music, art, theater and emerging talent in a way that feels specific rather than nostalgic.
  • Controlled distribution: a smaller network makes scarcity and service credible only if product and experience remain exceptional.

The risk is treating heritage as a list of recognizable codes. McQueen’s legacy was never only skulls, sharp shoulders or theatrical staging; it was a method of using cut, history and discomfort to create emotion. The next designer must understand that method while resisting imitation.

Two major Kering vacancies in one week

McGirr’s departure follows Anthony Vaccarello’s confirmed exit from Saint Laurent on October 9. Paris Runway Official examined that change in Anthony Vaccarello Exits Saint Laurent After a Decade.

The situations are not identical. Vaccarello led Saint Laurent for ten years and built a highly consistent commercial and visual language. McGirr’s three-year tenure ended while McQueen was still refining its post-Burton identity. Kering has said successors will be announced, but as of October 16 neither appointment has been confirmed.

What comes next

The facts are clear: McGirr is leaving; Kering wants a bold new direction; McQueen is restructuring; and the house intends to build on its tailoring, creativity and rebellious character. The name of the next creative leader remains the central unanswered question.

The informed conclusion is that this appointment will be as much about scale and business design as runway talent. McQueen needs a creative director capable of making a smaller house feel more culturally essential—not simply more visible.
