Kering Brings 10 Next-Generation Material Looks to Milan Fashion Week

Kering is taking material innovation out of the sample library and into full looks at Milan Fashion Week. The luxury group’s Material Innovation Lab and the talent platform S Style will present Wardrobe Edition during the September 2026 season: 10 complete looks, each developed by a different emerging designer using next-generation materials.

The project arrives as Milan prepares for its Spring/Summer 2027 womenswear calendar, which Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana confirms will run from September 22 to 28. It also lands at a difficult point for fashion’s sustainability agenda, when promising materials are being asked to prove not only that they can attract attention, but that they can perform, be manufactured and eventually reach meaningful volume.

What is confirmed about Wardrobe Edition

According to Vogue Business reporting published August 27, 2026, Wardrobe Edition is the third collaboration between Kering’s Material Innovation Lab, known as MIL, and S Style. The project was developed over the past year and will make its debut at Milan Fashion Week in September.

Each of the 10 participating designers created a full look. The designers were paid for their work and received business and marketing guidance, an important distinction from exposure-only incubator models. Kering’s Milan-based lab supplied technical support and access to a library that now contains more than 8,000 material samples from over 600 manufacturers and innovators, assembled over 13 years.

The materials span several categories rather than advancing one universal substitute. Reported examples include:

  • bio-based nanocellulose created through controlled microbial fermentation;
  • plant-derived iridescent pigments;
  • brewed protein fibers and silk produced with organic sericulture practices;
  • a wool textile engineered to produce a fur-like effect;
  • mycelium-based material used as an alternative to conventional leather;
  • hybrid material incorporating recycled polyamide from end-of-life tires; and
  • a bio-based filament intended for recyclable and compostable 3D printing.

The list matters because “alternative material” is not a single technical category. A material designed for a structured corset faces different tests from one intended for a soft bag, a shoe or a fluid garment. Wardrobe Edition turns those differences into visible design problems rather than hiding them behind a sample card.

From material promise to garment performance

The most useful part of the project may be the evidence of iteration. Designers reported adjusting backing, seam strength, thickness, adhesives and printing settings to make unfamiliar materials work. In one case, a flexible bio-based 3D-printing filament repeatedly stretched around a machine’s gears and clogged the printer before the process was refined. In another, a nanocellulose sheet required a different bonding solution before it could support the pressure of corsetry.

Those details keep the story grounded. A prototype can demonstrate that a material is creatively interesting and technically workable under specific conditions. It does not, by itself, confirm durability across years of use, a lower full-lifecycle impact, price competitiveness, consistent supply or commercial-scale production.

That distinction is especially important for fashion communications. “Made with an innovative material” is a verified product fact only when the material, composition and application are documented. Claims such as “sustainable,” “circular” or “better for the planet” require broader evidence about sourcing, processing, energy, chemistry, durability, end-of-life pathways and scale.

How the project fits Kering’s targets

Wardrobe Edition is not appearing in isolation. In its 10-year impact report published June 4, 2026, Kering set several measurable goals for its next sustainability chapter. These include reducing leather intensity by 30 percent by 2028 against a 2025 baseline, reaching 40 percent alternative materials and 20 percent regenerative materials in ready-to-wear by 2035, and generating 20 percent of revenue from innovation by 2035.

Wardrobe Edition can therefore be read as a design-facing test of a wider corporate strategy. The lab can identify and validate materials; emerging designers can show how those materials behave in ambitious fashion objects; but the commercial bridge still depends on orders, manufacturing infrastructure and adoption by more than one group.

That limitation has been acknowledged by the people closest to the project. Vogue Business reports that MIL director Christian Tubito sees broader brand and manufacturing participation as necessary because Kering’s volumes alone cannot build every industrial system required by the next generation of materials.

Paris Runway analysis: why Milan is the right stage

Milan Fashion Week gives Wardrobe Edition a sharper test than a closed innovation summit would. Buyers, editors, designers, manufacturers and luxury executives are already in the same city, concentrating the people who decide whether a material remains a compelling prototype or advances toward production.

For emerging designers, the project offers access to materials and technical knowledge that would otherwise be difficult to secure. For material innovators, a complete look provides evidence that a sample can survive creative development. For established houses, it offers a lower-risk way to observe performance before committing their own product teams.

The communications opportunity is equally specific. The strongest stories will focus on what was tested, what failed, what changed and what remains unresolved. That language is more credible than presenting experimentation as transformation before scale, commercial adoption or independently assessed impact has been demonstrated.

What to watch in September

When Wardrobe Edition is presented during Milan Fashion Week, four signals will matter:

  1. Material disclosure: whether compositions, suppliers and intended end-of-life routes are explained clearly.
  2. Performance evidence: whether the project shares testing for wear, care, repair and durability rather than appearance alone.
  3. Commercial follow-through: whether participating designers or larger houses place materials into sellable collections.
  4. Manufacturing commitments: whether brands, suppliers or investors support the infrastructure needed to increase production.

The project’s immediate achievement is more modest and more useful than a sweeping sustainability claim: it brings material scientists, innovators and designers into the same development process, then places the results in front of fashion’s decision-makers.
