From Refugee to Runway: Sammie Masuku's Inspiring Journey to Fashion Week
By Paris Runway Official Editorial Team
Fashion has long celebrated beauty, craftsmanship, and creativity, but every so often, a story emerges that reminds us its greatest power lies in resilience.
For Sammie Masuku, the reigning Ms Great Britain Edinburgh 2025, the runway represents far more than glamour but it symbolizes a journey defined by courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief that no dream is too distant to achieve.

Born in Zimbabwe, Sammie arrived in England as a refugee more than two decades ago. At just eight years old, she entered the care system, spending the next ten years navigating life without the traditional support of family. While many would have allowed those circumstances to define them, Sammie chose a different path.
Instead, she built one.
After leaving care at 18, she pursued a career in finance, steadily working her way through the corporate world until becoming a Regional Finance Manager. By 21, she had also become a single mother, balancing the demands of parenthood while continuing to build a successful career.
Yet despite her professional accomplishments, she couldn't ignore a calling that had always existed beneath the surface.
She wanted to inspire others.
That realization required one of the most difficult decisions of her life.
Rather than continuing to climb the corporate ladder, Sammie intentionally stepped away from a senior position to pursue a life more closely aligned with her purpose.
"It was a sacrifice," she says. "But sometimes growth only begins when you're willing to let go of what's comfortable."
That decision transformed everything.
Soon afterward, Sammie was crowned Ms Great Britain Edinburgh 2025, earning a place at the Miss Great Britain Finals and opening doors to opportunities she once believed impossible.

Her growing profile has led to national press coverage, including features in Edinburgh News, Edinburgh Live, and photography through Getty Images, introducing audiences to a woman whose story extends far beyond pageantry.
Fashion quickly became another avenue for that purpose.
Already having walked for the WONA Bridal x Opus Couture runway presentation, Sammie now has her sights firmly set on one of fashion's greatest milestones—walking at international Fashion Weeks.
"My goal is to walk Fashion Week one day," she says. "I want women who have had lives like mine to know that their circumstances don't determine their future."
It is a message rooted in lived experience.
Today, while continuing her work in finance, Sammie is building a personal brand centered on confidence, representation, and empowerment. She dreams not only of walking the runway but eventually becoming a television presenter or talk show host, using storytelling to amplify voices that deserve to be heard.
Her passion lies in helping others recognize the beauty they often struggle to see within themselves.
"I believe my purpose is to bring out the best in everyone I meet," she explains. "To help people discover confidence they didn't know they already had."

That philosophy extends particularly to young women and single mothers, communities she hopes to encourage through her own example.
Having overcome extraordinary adversity, she understands firsthand that confidence is rarely something we are given—it is something we build.
For Sammie, purpose is not something people stumble upon.
It is something they uncover by first discovering themselves.
"You are what you seek," she says. "You simply have to unlock it."
Her outlook is equally reflected in the personal motto that continues to guide her journey.
"Every 10% you give today adds up by the end of the week. When you're tired, do a little—but never stop."
It is advice she has lived every day of her life.
Looking ahead, Sammie's ambitions extend beyond her own career.
One of her greatest dreams is for her son to one day watch her walk a prestigious Fashion Week runway—a moment that would represent far more than personal success. It would stand as proof that perseverance, sacrifice, and self-belief can change the course of an entire family's story.
She also hopes to interview designers, models, and industry leaders during future fashion weeks, combining her passion for communication with her desire to inspire confidence in others.
Her story serves as a powerful reminder that fashion is not reserved for those with conventional beginnings.
Sometimes the most compelling people on the runway are those who have overcome the greatest obstacles simply to get there.
From refugee to finance professional, from single mother to beauty queen, and now preparing to pursue the world of international fashion, Sammie embodies a new definition of success—one measured not by titles alone, but by the lives she hopes to uplift along the way.
For the woman who once arrived in England searching for safety, the runway has become something far greater.
It has become a platform for purpose.
