Fortune Favors the Brave: Shay Duff Sets His Sights on Fashion and Olympic Gold
The 19-year-old Irish model and high-performance skeet shooter is preparing to take his ambitions from Dublin to New York, bringing the discipline of an international athlete to a promising career in fashion.
For Shay Duff, clothing has never simply been something to wear. It is a form of character, confidence and self-expression... a language he first began understanding through the cinema of the 1980s.
Growing up just north of Dublin, Duff was captivated by the decade’s stoic action heroes, whose leather jackets, rugged denim and heavy boots seemed to communicate strength before a single word was spoken. He noticed how the characters carried themselves and how their clothing amplified their confidence. Before long, he began incorporating those same elements into his own wardrobe.
“When I began wearing that type of clothing, it became my everyday style,” Duff says. “It made me feel like the characters who wore it.”
As his understanding of fashion evolved, so did his personal style. What began with an appreciation for the cinematic uniform of leather and denim developed into a deeper fascination with the way clothing can communicate personality, professionalism and emotion. That discovery ultimately drew Duff toward modeling.
He became particularly interested in how designers use their collections to tell stories—translating their individual experiences, ideas and emotions into silhouettes, fabrics and details. Modeling, in his eyes, is not simply about wearing those designs. It is about helping the designer’s vision reach its fullest expression.
“I fell in love with how designers showcased different emotions and parts of their personalities through their designs,” he explains. “I could heavily resonate with that. I have always wanted to help designers portray what they are trying to communicate in the best way possible.”
Now represented by Assets Model Agency in Dublin, Duff is at the beginning of what he hopes will become an international career. Although he has not yet made his runway debut, he is currently being considered for the opening ceremony of Dublin Fashion Week and for Irish Fashion Week.
His ambitions reach well beyond his home country. Duff hopes to build a career encompassing international runway shows, editorials and campaigns, with Saint Laurent and Ralph Lauren among the fashion houses he would most like to work with. Their distinctive interpretations of strength, masculinity and refinement naturally complement the style that first inspired him.
In the new year, Duff plans to move to New York indefinitely... a decisive step intended to create greater opportunities in both modeling and competitive sport.
Yet fashion represents only one side of his extraordinary story.
Representing Ireland on the World Stage
Away from the camera, Duff is one of Ireland’s emerging talents in Olympic skeet shooting. His sporting career has already taken him to world-class competitions in Egypt, Qatar, Germany, Poland, Italy and France, with future events expected in Greece and Chinese Taipei.
He is recognized as one of Ireland’s official junior Olympic skeet shooters within the country’s high-performance pathway, representing Ireland internationally while building the experience and technical ability required to pursue his ultimate goal: competing at the Olympic Games and winning a gold medal for his country.
In 2025, Duff achieved the overall high-gun result among the junior Olympic skeet team across the selection process. He is also the only Irish junior Olympic skeet shooter to have achieved a Minimum Qualification Score, or MQS, and has recorded multiple development scores after just over a year of competition.
His sporting shooting accomplishments also include second- and third-place finishes at All-Ireland competitions, alongside numerous medals earned at provincial, county and local levels.
Behind those achievements, however, is a reality that many outside the sport rarely see. Competing internationally requires an enormous investment of time, training and personal funding. Even athletes representing their country at a high level may receive only limited financial assistance.
Duff’s Olympic journey is therefore largely self-funded.
For the past three to four years, he has worked on and off at The Misty Hollows, a spirituality shop owned by his sister. The job has helped him finance both his competitive shooting and his developing modeling career.
He also values the experience for reasons beyond financial support. The shop welcomes a diverse community of people who travel from across Ireland to visit, giving Duff the opportunity to meet individuals from different backgrounds and help them find what they need.
Balancing retail work, international competition, modeling and preparation for a transatlantic move requires considerable discipline. For Duff, that commitment is simply part of the pursuit.
A Life Built Around Self-Improvement
Physical training has been central to Duff’s life for approximately five years. What began primarily with weight training eventually expanded to include running and a more structured approach to cardiovascular fitness. At the beginning of this year, he also began working with a nutritionist to elevate his performance in both modeling and shooting.
Through that partnership, he lost more than 10 kilograms over four months while maintaining as much muscle as possible... an experience he describes as one of the best decisions he has made.
The physical transformation was only part of the result. Training has strengthened his confidence, reinforced his discipline and supported the life he wants to create.
Martial arts have contributed to that development as well. Duff holds an orange belt in ninjitsu and an advanced degree in Krav Maga, in addition to having trained in jiu-jitsu, boxing and kickboxing. Although each discipline is different, he believes they share an ability to teach self-control, inner calm and confidence.
Even gaming, one of his quieter passions, has influenced the person he has become. Video games gave him a place to learn, connect with people and escape during his younger years. While his increasingly demanding schedule leaves less time to play, it remains an important part of his story.
Across these seemingly different interests runs a consistent thread: Duff is drawn to pursuits that challenge him to grow.
“I have always loved the idea of constant growth,” he says. “I want to push past my limits in every capacity and become the best possible person I can be.”
Finding Purpose Through Courage
At 19, Duff does not believe purpose must arrive as a single, perfectly defined calling. He understands the pressure young people can feel to know exactly where their lives are heading, because he once felt it himself.
Over time, he came to see uncertainty differently.
For Duff, youth should be a time for exploration... an opportunity to try, fail, learn and begin again. Purpose may not be something a person discovers all at once. It may instead emerge through pursuing meaningful interests, caring for others and committing to becoming a better version of oneself.
That philosophy also shapes his understanding of creativity. He believes creating means using one’s experiences, personality and available resources to produce something capable of helping others, whether it is a work of art that inspires a positive emotion or a medical innovation that saves a life.
“We should never stop creating,” he says, “as long as the goal is to do good with it.”
It is an outlook captured by the Latin phrase Duff has carried with him since his school years: Fortis fortuna adiuvat - fortune favours the brave.
The motto appeared beside his photograph in his graduation yearbook, but it has become far more than a quote. It reflects the way he approaches competition, personal development and the uncertain beginnings of a modeling career. Courage, in Duff’s world, means continually testing one’s limits and trusting that committed action will create opportunity.
His forthcoming move to New York will be the clearest expression of that belief yet. It will take him away from the familiar and place him within one of the world’s most competitive fashion markets, while also allowing him to pursue new possibilities for his sport.
Duff is entering the industry without pretending that success will arrive overnight. He knows what it means to train repeatedly, finance an ambitious journey and compete under pressure. Those experiences have already taught him that meaningful progress is built through discipline long before it becomes visible to others.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic about this opportunity, and I can’t thank Paris Runway Official enough,” he says. “I can’t wait to meet new people and experience everything that comes with it. Anything could come from this, and that is what makes it so exciting.”
For now, Shay Duff stands at the beginning of two demanding journeys: one leading toward the international runway and the other toward the Olympic stage. Both will require sacrifice, resilience and courage.
Fortunately, he has built his life around all three.
