Ferragamo SS27 Reimagines the Invisible Sandal Through Light and Structure
Milan, September 27, 2026 — Ferragamo’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection returned to one of the house’s most inventive archival objects: Salvatore Ferragamo’s 1947 “Invisible Sandal.” Maximilian Davis used transparency, suspension and engineered curves as starting points for a 62-look runway shown in Milan on September 26.
What was confirmed
Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana scheduled Ferragamo for 11:30 a.m. at Viale Emilio Alemagna 6. Vogue’s runway record identifies Davis as the designer and documents 62 looks. Its collection report connects the season directly to the 1947 sandal, while also noting references to photographer Lee Miller and artist Man Ray.
The original sandal is relevant because its effect depended on construction rather than decoration: nearly invisible upper elements made the foot appear suspended above the sole. For Spring/Summer 2027, Davis did not simply reproduce that object. Reporting from the show describes the idea being translated into transparent silk-wool, rubber components, curved lines and silhouettes controlled at the waist.
From archival footwear to a full wardrobe
Belts and wrapped shapes emphasized the waist, giving structure to materials that could otherwise read as weightless. A dry palette of sand and neutral tones reinforced the focus on form, while darker and richer accents prevented transparency from becoming the collection’s only message.
Footwear carried the archival dialogue most directly. The season explored sculptural sole and heel constructions associated with Ferragamo’s history of technical experimentation. Established house codes also appeared through interpretations of the Vara pump, while the Cara bag extended the rounded, engineered language into accessories.
The collection therefore treated heritage as a design method. The point was less to place a museum object on the runway than to ask what its principles—lightness, illusion and technical problem-solving—can do across clothing, shoes and bags now.
Paris Runway Official’s analysis
Editorial assessment: Building the season around one documented archival innovation gives Ferragamo a disciplined press narrative. The 1947 sandal is specific enough to support historical storytelling, yet its ideas can be communicated visually without requiring every new piece to resemble the original.
For fashion communications teams, the best content hierarchy begins with the archive, moves into construction details and ends with the complete silhouette. A short sequence showing transparent material, waist architecture and footwear engineering would explain the collection more effectively than a generic “heritage” claim.
The Lee Miller and Man Ray references add an image-making framework through light, shadow and visual distortion. They should be treated as contextual influences, not as proof of a formal collaboration or endorsement. Likewise, runway reception cannot establish retail demand. Pricing, delivery depth and commercial allocation have not been disclosed in the sources reviewed.
Why the story has durability
Archive-led collections often compete for attention during fashion week, but a single, well-evidenced object can give coverage a longer life. Ferragamo can connect runway reviews, museum-style education, accessory close-ups and client storytelling without changing the central idea. That consistency is valuable as the industry moves from Milan into a crowded Paris schedule.
